Here you can have a peek at some of the projects we have been involved in lately
Our professional background spans from conducting transport and land use analysis to strategic spatial planning, with particular expertise in development suitability modelling, bid-rent modelling, and service accessibility modelling. Recent projects have involved land budgeting and population allocation modelling for future scenarios, alongside the disaggregation of larger-scale economic indicators into local spatial planning units.

Security Risks on the Gautrain Management Agency Rail Infrastructure
This research paper informed the long-term planning processes of the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) – mainly focussed on understanding safety and security concerns on the rail infrastructure as part of their planned extension of the Gautrain coverage. The project interrogated what and where security risks occur in and outside the Gautrain system and provided insights into possible drivers. The insights developed into the possible methods can be applied to undertake this type of assessment in the future.
The most pressing key objectives of the research partnership included addressing the following security management-related questions:
• Is there any relationship between land use and rail reserve events/crime?
• How does land use change affect the prevalence of rail reserve events?
• Identify possible security threats due to land use and travel patterns changes.
• Where are areas (hotspots) with high cable theft in the system? What are potential threats, and what are possible solutions to this problem?

Ermelo-Wesselton Priority Development Areas - Density Policy
This project is an initiative to provide pathways towards the crafting of a Development Plan and Implementation Framework for the Ermelo-Wesselton Priority Development Area (EWPDA) through smart, inclusive, vibrant, diverse, integrated, and sustainable development strategies.
The project aim was to prepare a Development Plan for the EWPDA. The project objectives relate to the following:
• Ensuring access to basic services
• Enabling settlement restructuring
• Promoting economic growth
• Upgrading and/or expanding bulk services
• Responding to the need of targeted communities, and
• Designing, packaging and prioritizing project interventions that will enable and support the achievement of the development vision & ideal land use mix.

National Spatial Action Areas
These NSAAs represent the most urgent strategic spatial development catalysts to
(1) bring about radical spatial transformation at scale, and
(2) manage and mitigate rising national risks, and as such, require immediate national action.
Concerted and sustained intergovernmental collaboration is required in these NSAAs over the short term to:
• Target context-specific, focused, and catalytic national spatial development interventions; and
• Kickstart the process of aligning plans, budgets, and departmental plans in and between spheres of government around national spatial development priorities

The Karoo RSDF - Tourism Network
The map depict the strategic tourism network in the larger Karoo area.
Bidrent Model of the City of Johannesburg
The Bid Rent model makes use of a multi-criteria analysis to indicate areas with high development potential and a low level of environmental sensitivities.
Bio-ecological and Bio-economic areas of South Africa
The map overlays the Bio-economic and Bio-ecologic areas to indicate areas of conflict that need to be managed.
Developable Land in the Lanseria area.
Developable land in the Lanseria area are indexed by the level of constraints. The constraints include environmental, land use, infrastructure and undevelopable land.
Xhariep District Rural Development Plan
Identified projects over a whole range were overlayed with the functional economic areas of the district.
Lanseria RSDP - Long-term development scenario
The map shows the long-term development scenario for the Lanseria area. It mainly indicates the development of nodes and the connectors between them. These are infilled by specific land uses in support of a specialist airport node in the future.
Waterberg - Land reform area typologies
This academic project tried to develop location criteria for different types of agriculture based land reform strategies for South Africa. Different project types need different locational preferences and they were spatially quantified to show the ideal location of such projects.
Mogale City Town Planning Scheme
MandalaGIS was involved in updating the Mogale City Town Planning Scheme in a digital format.
Lanseria BidRent Index.
The Bid Rent model makes use of a multi-criteria analysis to indicate areas with high development potential and a low level of environmental sensitivities.
Cape Town - Road Access to Police Stations
Access to Police Stations over their precint boundaries were tested to get insights of how well placed the stations, and the demarcation of police precincts are.
Gauteng Urban Edge History
The development and changes to the urban edge in Gauteng was done by combining all the metros and municipal edges over time.
Xhariep District - Combined urban access and density
The map shows different classes of accessibility and urban density for the Xhariep District Municipality.
Towns and Cities dependent on Inter-basin Water Transfers
MandalaGIS captured all large scale inter-basin water transfers in South Africa and overlayed them with the NSDF functional town hierarchy to determine the level of dependence to these schemes.
Tembisa - Density of Taxi stop events.
The map that was prepared for the Gauteng Spatial Development Framework shows very interesting patterns in the township that can assist in the transition of land use rights in support of the township economy.
Gauteng Spatial Development Framework Focus Areas
Focus areas for specific typologies of townships and economic areas were developed with specific interventions that is applicable for an area.
Western Cape Murder Rate 2020/21
This map depict the murder crime rate per 100 000 population in the Western Cape. All crime categories are mapped as total incidents as well as the rate per 100k population per police precinct.
RSDP in Southern part of Johannesburg
This map of the cross-municipal border shows all project that was current and planned in the study area. Where possible the monetary value of the project are also shown.
Western Cape - Police capacity in relation to murder incidents
The map describes the capacity of SAPS stations in relationship with the murder rate of the stations precinct.
This was done to try to determine to what level police capacity plays a role in the level of crime that take place at a given precinct.

Xenophobic, Vigilante and Crime Policing Protests
Statistics on xenophobic incidents are managed in a geo-database and mapped. Researchers in the field use the maps and statistics to study the occurrence and location of incidents in South Africa.
Makro Suitability Surface for Aquaculture on the KZN coastline.
A macro-scale suitability analysis were done to detemine suitable site for an aquaculture farm on the KZN coastline. The analysis took into account all national, provincial and local environmental policy, natural conditions such as slope, soils, upstream river pollution and current and future land use along the coast. A micro suitability study was then done by DeltaBEC Engineers to select alternative sites and study the in detail.
South Africa - Public Protest Hotspots 2018 to 2020
The Institute of Security Studies (ISS) keeps a database of public protest incidents in the country since 2013.
The incident record has information on the date, time, location and type of protest.
The data is used in combination with the the SAPS published crimestats per precinct to make predictions of where and why public protests in the country may happen given specific conditions.

Water management in the Bojanala District.
The study tried to determine the relationships between land use and water management and usage in the Bojanala Distric Council area of the North-West Province.
Of importance was the fact that the area are the beneficiary of all used water of the Lesotho and other inter-basin water transfer schemes that feeds Gauteng's urban and economic uses. The location of water treatment plants and the management thereof became clear as depicted in this map.
